The City of Sheboygan has announced that the final coal-fired electricity generation unit at the Edgewater Generating Station is coming down soon as the city prepares to transition into utilizing solar panels to generate their electricity.
Two of the units were taken offline in 2019, with the final unit scheduled to be torn down next year.
At their meeting on Monday (February 1st), the Common Council approved a plan created by the Wisconsin Power and Light Company to build a solar photovoltaic generating facility on an 80-acre portion of the Sheboygan Business Center.
The town of Two Creeks is also home to a solar power plant, located on Highway 42 just north of Two Rivers. It features 500,000 solar panels across 800 acres and can power more than 33,000 homes.
No word on the size or capacity of the Sheboygan Solar Facility.
