Manitowoc Lincoln High School senior guard Mason Dopirak set the school career scoring record during the Ships 64-39 win at Sheboygan South last night.
Dopirak began the night at Acuity Fieldhouse needing only 9-points to surpass Nathan Zastrow’s 1,586 points, set in 2009. Mason shattered the record ‘early’ in the game with a three on the left wing with 13:07 remaining in the first half, as part of a Ships 39-to-19 halftime lead.
Ships Head Coach Thadd (Tad) Cornell spoke with us about Mason’s achievement.
“He led us in scoring all four years he’s been on the varsity and to think of the players who’ve come through our school in Manitowoc it’s an incredible record to have,” Cornell said. “He’s also had some really good teammates who’ve set a lot of screens for him.”
South Redwings Coach Jesse Shaw, a Lincoln High graduate, also commented on Mason’s achievement, saying “He’s been a class act and I’ve enjoyed competing against him. You can tell he comes from a good family and will be a good ambassador for Manitowoc basketball in years to come, having that record.”
Dopirak would score 41 points to lead his team to victory, while his younger brother Matus chipped in 10 in helping Lincoln snap a 3-game losing skid and improve to 5-and-6.
Manitowoc was able to short-circuit a 2nd half rally by the Redwings by converting 21-of-24 at the free-throw line, including 11-for-11 by Mason Dopirak.
South (now 1-&-8) was led by Marcelle Drone who wound up with a double/double: 14-points and 12-rebound.
