Alliant Energy says its shift from coal-fired production to renewable energy means it will shut down its power plant near Pardeeville.
The Columbia Energy Center has been operating for more than 45 years. Alliant estimates the switch to renewable power sources will save customers about 250-million dollars on their bills over the next 10 years. It also helps reduce water usage and eliminates carbon emissions. The shutdown isn’t immediate. Unit One will close by 2023 and Unit Two by the next year. About 100 employees at the facility will be affected.
When operations cease, the Columbia Energy Center will be the last coal-fired energy facility in Wisconsin.
