With the continuation of the Covid-19 pandemic, health professionals at Holy Family Memorial are noticing that adolescent girls and women patients they’ve seen have had more mental health concerns this year than ever before.
Doreen Krause, an HFM Nurse Practitioner with the Women’s Health Department, was asked if women are more at risk for the virus if they’re pregnant, ” Women have a lower immune system that makes them susceptible to viral and respiratory infections like the flu. But, we’re not seeing that from the Covid virus so we don’t think they’re more at risk from the Covid-19.”
Krause goes on to explain if a pregnant woman can transmit Covid-19 to her baby during pregnancy or delivery. She states, “We haven’t found any cases where the Covid-19 was transmitted to the baby during pregnancy. We have found some cases where early on the infant is positive for Covid-19, so we think you can pass it on during close contact after delivery.
The HFM Nurse Practitioner advises prenatal care continues to be the most important way to ensure a healthy pregnancy and you should keep all your OB appointments during and after pregnancy. She says currently they ask that only one support person attend appointments with you.
Masks are required at all HFM facilities. If you don’t have a mask, they’ll give you one at check-in and also take your temperature.
