With 9:10 left on the first half clock, Mishicot Senior Forward Kylie Schmidt stole a pass at mid-court and drove to the basket sinking a layup, and in the process broke the all-time scoring record for Mishicot High School.
Kylie shattered the girl’s record earlier this year, and entered the matchup with Reedsville with 1,356 points, seven behind Tommy Schmidt (no relation), who set the old record in 2004.
Kylie set the record on Senior Night in front of her family, which was a very special feeling for her. “It’s honestly crazy that it landed on this night of all nights, and I get to spend it with my four best friends,” Kylie told SeehaferNews.com. “Desiree [Kleiman] Abby [Garceau] Kallie [Kruegger] and Maddie [Dokey] have been with me since 3rd grade, so it’s really cool that I get to share this special moment with them.”
Another person who has been with that group of seniors since 3rd grade is Coach Mike Garceau, who actually started his coaching career with that group. “Tonight we honor that whole class along with Kylie, so it’s kind of a fitting deal that Kylie sets that all-time record, along with recognizing this whole senior group,” Mike stated, “From when they started to where Mishicot Girls basketball was to where it is now, is deserving of a lot of credit, and these five kind of lead the charge in making that transition happen.”
The previous record-holder, Tommy Schmidt was a member of the State finalist 2004 squad along with Kylie’s father, who made it to the championship game at state before falling to Dominican 46-31. Tommy ended his high school career with 13 points, leading his team toward earning a silver ball.
He was not in attendance last night due to scheduling conflicts, but Coach Garceau said he will hand over the proverbial torch at a later date.
Kylie said that while breaking individual records in cool, the team really only has one goal in mind. “Going back to last year, we went to state, but it didn’t end the way we wanted it to,” she explained. “But it was one of the biggest accomplishments that we had, and we are trying to go back this year.”
Kylie ended the night with 20 points, leading her team to an 84-34 win over conference foe Reedsville, capping off a memorable night for Kylie and her teammates.
