The Manitowoc Board of Education has voted unanimously to place an operating referendum question on the April 6th Spring Election ballot.
In a letter to Manitowoc Public School District families, Superintendent Mark Holzman explained the referendum will ask voters for approval for up to $4.3 million annually, for three years, to maintain existing K-thru-12 educational programming and opportunities along with funding capital and technology needs.
If approved, the amount will have little to no impact on school property taxes as the MPSD would continue to have one of the lowest tax rates in the state.
The first year, the school tax levy rate is projected to decrease by one cent to $7.80 per thousand of equalized home value in 2021-’22. Holzman pointed out the district’s tax rate has decreased in each of the past 6-years.
The Superintendent explained in his letter, “I know that our proud traditions have looked differently over the past 10 months during this unprecedented pandemic. But, we are excited to bring our students back to school and resume some of those great traditions.”
Holzman continued, “I realize the timing for sharing information regarding a referendum is not ideal: however, it is critically important.”
More information about the ballot question will be shared in the coming months prior to the April election.
