Since January is National Radon Action Month, the Manitowoc County Health Department has asked everyone to learn more about Radon, and how you can protect your family from being exposed to it.
The first thing you should know is that radon is a radioactive and odorless gas, which comes from trace amounts of natural uranium in the ground. It can seep through crack and opening in the basement of homes, causing medical issues such as cancer.
In fact, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer behind smoking. The Health Department says that 1 in 10 homes in Wisconsin have elevated radon levels, so getting your home tested is a good idea.
The inexpensive and easy test kits can be purchased from the Health Department for $6, with analysis included.
To obtain a kit, either visit the Health Department, located at 1028 South 9th Street in Manitowoc or give them a call at 920-683-4155.
