During his State of the State Address, Governor Tony Evers said that he was going to call a special session for lawmakers to address the problems with the Unemployment Insurance system.
Legislative Republican leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg, have called on Governor Evers to take ownership of these problems.
“Governor Evers already has the funding and tools he needs to fix the problems at DWD,” said LeMahieu. “Now, instead of effectively using his resources, he’s scrambling to shift blame while people are still left waiting.”
According to a Legislative Fiscal Bureau memo, the Evers administration has numerous current appropriations that could potentially be used for IT upgrades, including financing a system through the state master lease program and expediting the procurement of a new system and any contractors needed to successfully implement a new system.
Others who voiced comments in the news release included Speaker Robin Vos, Senate President Chris Kapenga, and Assembly Majority Leader Jim Steineke.
