On Friday, we reported that the Lakeshore’s representative in Congress, Glen Grothman, had condemned the riots at the Capitol on Wednesday and that he called for the perpetrator’s backgrounds to be revealed to the world.
We spoke with the Congressman, as asked him to explain what exactly he meant by that. “I just want to know the type of people that would do this,” he said. “Whenever you have a crime, you want to know what is going on. Obviously, it was not just one or two people, it was dozens of people. Were they members of national groups? We already heard about a few of them, but hopefully we will hear about a lot more of them.”
In his written statement, Grothman had also criticized Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump Jr., but received criticism, from some media sources for not doing the same for the President.
Grothman did so during his time on the WCUB Breakfast Club Friday morning. “I think the President did gin up this day to be more than it should have been, and some of my colleagues did as well, and I have been very critical of them to leadership or within the building,” he stated. “I guess the reason I singled out Rudy Giuliani and the President’s son, is they were the ones they kept showing on TV, their speeches, which were both wildly inappropriate.”
Grothman also reiterated his stance on Congress ratifying the election of Joe Biden as President, saying that the symbolic votes by his party members to overturn the vote of the people could set a dangerous precedent. “The Electoral College is part of our Constitution,” Grothman said bluntly. “The idea that we confirm the electors whom the states have sent us, is something that has been true throughout our history. The idea that the US congress could say ‘No Wisconsin, we are not going to accept who you give us.’ is just a very dangerous precedent, and is complexly the opposite of what is in the Constitution.”
Grothman also said that the individuals who did vote against who their state voted for could be hurting the Republican party in the future, because now it could be done back to them, but with more and more Congressmen and women doing it.
