The Manitowoc City Council met on Monday, and on top of announcing the addition of AMMO Inc to the industrial community, the Council continued their conversation regarding a proposed apartment complex near downtown.
While the project is expected to go on, Mayor Justin Nickels said they haven’t finished all the legal red tape just yet for the Allie Apartment building.
“We’re still working on a Term Sheet with them for apartments on the River Point District,” Nickels explained. “We were close to the end, and we will be bringing a final recommendation to the Council in two weeks at their meeting on Monday, January 18th.”
SeehaferNews.com asked the Mayor why the River Point District is so important to the City of Manitowoc. He said, “So we have to look at what Manitowoc has that not many other communities do. We have 20 acres of undeveloped land right adjacent to our downtown, and right along the Manitowoc River. There are other cities that would do anything for an opportunity to expand their downtown.”
As for why they decided to go with living accommodations, Nickels said, “The Millennial generation and the next generation of the workforce don’t necessarily want to buy that house right upfront. They want an apartment, and they also want to live downtown, where Petula Clark said ‘The lights are bright.’ We are looking at what might be a gamechanger for downtown.”
Since the deal is not completed yet, Mayor Nickels could not expand on any of the details of the structure, including a size estimate.
