The City of Manitowoc has announced that an Arizona based ammunition manufacturer will be building a new facility in the I-43 Industrial Park.
AMMO Inc acquired Jagemann Stamping’s brass casing division last November and will be building a 160,000 square foot facility. Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels told SeehaferNews.com that this is another huge step toward recovering from the departure of the Miro and Manitowoc Companies several years back.
“Over the years we have seen Briess, we have seen Konecranes recently, we’ve seen Robinson Metal, Alliance, all these new companies to Manitowoc, and that’s exactly what AMMO is,” Nickels explained. “Our goal is to attract new business to come to Manitowoc, and the fact that AMMO is going to be bringing a lot of good-paying manufacturing jobs to Manitowoc just proves that Manitowoc is a place where people want to do business.”
Nickels said that getting AMMO Inc to consider Manitowoc for their new location was the easy part. “It’s easy to sell Manitowoc’s assets, especially for manufacturing,” he said. “We have a workforce that you can’t find in any other state. This is an Arizona based company, and you can’t find a workforce like you can at Jagemann Stamping…anywhere else in the world.”
Even with the workforce incentives, the highway being right there, and the option to utilize maritime shipping, Mayor Nickels said they were still competing for their business. “We did have to put a package together, just like we did with every other business I mentioned, to incentivize them to make the final decision to move to Manitowoc,” Nickels explained.
That package included $1.4 million in TIF incentives, but the Mayor said he believes it will be well worth the investment. “In the end, they were a great company to work with,” he explained. “Myself and my staff feel very confident that this is a company that will be here for a very long run.”
AMMO anticipates opening the new plant with approximately 150 employees, expecting to increase its workforce over the following 18-24 months and beyond. The estimated $12 million construction project is expected to break ground sometime this coming spring.
