A working smoke detector helped alert a Kiel family about a fire in their home early this morning.
Kiel Fire Department Captain Kevin Voland said personnel were dispatched shortly after 4:30 am to 1141 Sixth Street for the report of smoke and flames in the kitchen of a single-family home.
The residents were asleep on the second floor when they were awakened by the smoke alarm. Those residents along with the family dog were able to escape unharmed.
Fire crews encountered heavy flame and heat conditions on the 1st floor, according to Captain Voland. Fire also extended to the basement and the home’s exterior, but firefighters had the blaze under control within 10-minutes of their arrival.
The cause of the fire at 1141 Sixth Street is under investigation by Manitowoc County Fire Investigators and Kiel Police Department.
The initial damage estimate is $75,000.
Kiel firefighters were also assisted at the scene by the KFD ambulance and fire departments from Chilton, Elkhart Lake, New Holstein and St. Anna.
