Efforts to curb the spread of invasive species have continued in Manitowoc County throughout the fall and winter of 2020.
The Manitowoc County Dept. of Soil & Water Conservation along with local conservation organizations have been a part of the partnership that is revitalizing the Lakeshore Invasive Species Management Area (LISMA), the Cooperative Weed Management Area that incorporates Manitowoc, Calumet, Fond du Lac and Kewaunee Counties. Currently, LISMA is partnering with the Woodland Dunes Nature Center & Preserve State Natural Area to treat populations of Japanese Barberry, Honeysuckle, and Buckthorn on 45 acres of the natural area.
Woodland Dunes includes ridge and swale topography near Lake Michigan and is part of the West Twin River watershed that has been designated as an area of global significance for its species richness and importance to migratory and breeding birds.
This control project will expand Woodland Dunes’ ongoing efforts in battling these species throughout the preserve.
