The Fourth of July tends to have the highest number of traffic fatalities, but New Year’s Eve sees the highest in drunk driving related fatalities.
With that in mind, the Manitowoc County Tavern League sponsors the “Safe-Ride” program for its members.
Tim “Tippy” Tomchek, Safe-Ride Coordinator in the county, tells us that Safe-Ride is designed to give bar patrons a safe ride home if they’ve had “too many.”
Tim says, “First of all they have to be a Tavern League member and offer Safe-Ride. If the patron would like a safe ride home, they ask the bartender who then calls one of the three cab companies. They come and pick them up to take them home for free.”
Tomchek also explains that the popularity has gone up significantly since its start 20 years ago.
“We started with one cab company 20 years ago and maybe provided 50 rides per month, but it’s gone up tremendously. There’s also an awareness too, that if you’ve had too many don’t take the chance and get in that car and hurt somebody else, or get pulled over and arrested.
