The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has recalled some pet food products after 28 deaths and 8 illnesses were reported after consumption.
All of the products were produced by Sportmix and contained potentially fatal levels of aflatoxin. Aflatoxin is produced by mold grown on corn and other grains and can cause sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, jaundice, diarrhea, and in some cases liver damage.
There is no evidence to suggest that pet owners who handle products containing aflatoxin are at risk of aflatoxin poisoning, however, pet owners should always wash their hands after handling pet food.
If you have any of the recalled products, you are encouraged to return them where you bought them.
