Manitowoc is the recipient of two State Harbor Assistance Program Grants totaling nearly $2 million.
Mayor Justin Nickels says $1.25 million will be used to construct a rail system and loadout platform for multiple cranes built by Konecranes while Broadwind Heavy Fabricators will fabricate the crane components.
“They are building a massive crane,” he told SeehaferNews.com, “If you go down there you’ll see a big blue platform where this crane will be built. These are used by the military and large ships at sea. This grant ensures a viable future for Konecranes in Manitowoc keeping people employed right here.”
The second is a $720 thousand Grant for emergency repairs and reconstruction of the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan Carferry ramp east counter-weight platform.
Nickels explained that “There are two counterweights that are in need of repair due to recent winds and storms creating high water levels. This will make them whole and new. But they are expensive and we’re grateful to receive this grant money to ensure that the S.S. Badger continues to sail.”
No word on when repair work will begin.
Nickels added, “This a perfect example of working together with the state to keep jobs and tourism in Manitowoc.”
