
MONDAY
– Two persons were injured, one seriously, in a one-vehicle crash in Kewaunee County Saturday evening. According to a news release from the Kewaunee County Sheriff’s Office, a 54-year old Forestville man lost control of his SUV on an icy portion of State Highway 54 in the Town of Casco. The driver and a 55-year old Forestville woman were transported by ambulance to a Green Bay hospital.
– A 53-year-old De Pere man was arrested on his 7th OWI offense late last week. State Troopers responded to a single vehicle accident at around 10:30 PM last Thursday on Interstate 41 near County Road U in Outagamie County. Subsequent investigation revealed the driver, Joseph L. Smits, was operating while under the influence.
– A Manitowoc County trust established to fund outdoor-related projects has issued a reminder that it is accepting applications for grants through December 28th. FORWARD, generally has $6,00 to $8,000 available for community projects in Manitowoc County tied to hunting, fishing-&-conservation. Applications are available at www.mantyfg.org.
– A Roncalli athlete has signed a national letter of intent to play collegiate softball. Senior Maddie Hablewitz will be playing softball at Ripon College. The local high school issued a release saying that the daughter of DJ and Sara Hablewitz was a three-sport athlete at Roncalli, playing volleyball and basketball as well as softball. She had a .480 career batting average while playing catcher, center field and shortstop for the Jets. She plans to pursue a degree in physical therapy at Ripon.
TUESDAY
– The City of Manitowoc officially has another candidate for the Office of Mayor. Longtime resident and former high school Teacher Chris Able submitted his nomination papers Monday afternoon and his name will now appear on the April 6 ballot. Able will be opposing Justin Nickels who is running for his fourth term in the April 6 election. Candidates have until the end of this year to file nomination papers for the Office of Mayor.
– The man facing charges in a driveway asphalt scam has pleaded not guilty. Mico Miller is facing three counts of Theft by False Representation in Brown County, and similar charges in four other counties. However, Miller’s defense attorney said there is a chance that all of those charges could be consolidated into a single case.
– Children in the Manitowoc Area have another opportunity to see Santa Claus this coming weekend. Santa will be visiting Festival Foods this Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 PM. Santa is also taking COVID-19 precautions as he will be located behind the glass in the Tot Spot by the registers.
– The Calumet, Manitowoc and Sheboygan County Farm Service Agency (FSA) offices are currently searching for minority producers interested in serving as an advisor to the FSA County Committees. It is recommended that interested groups or individuals submit advisor nominations by January 11, 2021. Nominations can be sent to tom.schneider@usda.gov.
WEDNESDAY
– A group of local parents of students in the Manitowoc Public School District have planned a protest for this weekend. One of the organizers of the protest told SeehaferNews.com that they are “fed up and want their kids back in school by Second Semester.” Superintendent Mark Holzman refused to comment on the protest itself, but did say that the Board of Education has been working on ways to get students back into schools.
– The Two Rivers City Manager is asking for the help of the citizens of his community. Greg Buckley asked citizens of the city to take an online survey, which is the first step in the process to update their 10-year comprehensive plan. You can click here to take the survey.
– The Manitowoc Public School District has announced that there is a vacancy on the Board of Education, and they are looking to fill that position for a partial term. The term of office is set to expire on April 25th of next year, so it will not be a long term commitment. Any eligible candidate who wants to be considered for the position will need to deliver a letter of interest and a sworn Declaration of Candidacy to the District Office, which is located at 2902 Lindberg Drive.
– The Green Bay Police Department will be receiving body cameras after months of discussion and research. The City Council approved the purchase of the cameras during their meeting Tuesday night, and it is estimated that these cameras will be in use by March. The Green Bay Packers organization is helping to offset the cost to the city with a $757,000 donation.
THURSDAY
– The Manitowoc County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance that would require all law enforcement entities in the County to adopt a use-of-force policy at their meeting on Tuesday. This ordinance also prohibits the excessive use of force against any peaceful protesters by the Sheriff’s Deputies. It also states that the County will enforce a policy that follows state and local laws that bar entrance to or the leaving of any area where a non-violent protest or demonstration is taking place in the name of civil rights.
– HSHS Wisconsin and its physician partner, Prevea Health, administered the first round of COVID-19 vaccines allotted to them by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) for frontline health care workers yesterday. The first round of vaccines was provided to a number of frontline health care workers based in Green Bay for Prevea Health, HSHS St. Vincent Hospital and HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center.
– The Sheboygan Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is not going as well as they had hoped it would. With a little over a week remaining, they have only reached 25% of their $150,000 goal. Leaders at the Salvation Army said they did expect a smaller turnout this year due to COVID-19 keep shoppers at home and affecting the incomes of so many people.
– A local all-male a cappella singing group is lending its’ support to music education programs in Manitowoc County. The Clipper City Chordsmen recently presented checks for $300 each to the music programs of Manitowoc Lincoln and Roncalli High Schools. The checks were given to Choral Directors David Bowman at Lincoln and Frank Birr at Roncalli by Chordsmen Vice President, Don Lewellen, and the chairman of the Summer Scholarship Program, Bob Fricke.
FRIDAY
– The former high school guidance counselor who secretly recorded video of students and staff in the bathroom has been sentenced. 55-year-old Todd Naze will be spending 15 years in federal prison after he was found guilty of two counts of Producing Child Pornography.
– The Sheboygan Police Department is asking for the public’s help in identifying an individual who broke into a gas station last month. The incident took place on November 20th at the Clark Station on North 15th Street, and saw the man take a couple of cartons of cigarettes. A photo of the suspect can be found here.
– The COVID-19 vaccine is officially in the City of Manitowoc. Holy Family Memorial announced on Facebook yesterday, that they received their first doses of the Pfizer vaccine, which were delivered by the Wisconsin State Patrol.
– The Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center has announced special extended hours for the 2020 holiday season. Beginning on Wednesday, December 23, Farm Wisconsin will offer additional times and dates for guests to visit the discovery center. Farm Wisconsin will open at 9:00 AM each day except on Christmas, when they will be closed.
