As we reported earlier today, the Manitowoc Public School District Board of Education approved the implementation of their first phase of returning students to in-person learning.
One person that was quite happy with the decision is Board President Dave Nickels.
“I think we took a big step forward.” Nickels told SeehaferNews.com. “It wasn’t exactly as I had proposed it would go, but I’m very supportive of what we did.”
Nickels said that the Board actually adjusted the criteria needed to bring students back. “We still have what we call a gating criteria. That looks at what the Burden Rate is in our community,” Nickels explained. “We are still at a high level in our community, but we have modified the standards we are using, and that allows us to then get back into school and open up our activities, including athletics.”
Speaking of athletics, Nickels confirmed that if no major changes occur, the basketball teams at Lincoln High School will be able to begin practice on Monday.
“I think it’s really going to give hope at least to our students, and our parents that we can get back to what we look at as normal activities,” Nickles said of the news. “That includes people getting together, having athletic contests, having other activities, and just being in school, learning, and having our teachers there.”
Even though there are still three full weeks left in December, Nickels said there likely wouldn’t be any basketball games until after the 1st of the year.
