With time growing short for a decision, the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission failed to pick a new police chief at its Thursday meeting.
Two votes were tied three-to-three.
Commission members have less than three weeks before interim Police Chief Michael Brunson Senior is scheduled to retire.
The decision could be made at a meeting set for next Thursday.
Three members of the commission voted for FBI supervisory agent Hoyt Mahaley, a Milwaukee native, and three voted for Dallas Police Major Malik Aziz.
