Several local entities are teaming up to remind us that November is National Diabetes Awareness Month.
According to Healthiest Manitowoc County Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition, in partnership with the Lakeshore Tobacco Prevention Network and Holy Family Memorial, growing concerns over COVID-19 means it’s time to be even more diligent in reducing risk related to diabetes.
A news release indicates “One very important way of lowering someone’s risk to diabetes complications and coronavirus severity is by quitting use of tobacco products.”
Officials say smoking and tobacco use further increase inflammation. Therefore, the combination of heart disease, poorly-controlled diabetes, and smoking make COVID-19 complications even more of a concern.
In addition, an analysis of many studies reveals that current smokers had an increased risk of developing type-2 diabetes & the risk was increased further the more someone smoked.
