Governor Tony Evers and Attorney General Josh Kaul have filed a suit challenging a set of “lame-duck” laws passed two years ago by Republicans.
The suit filed Monday is focused on a requirement that the Legislature’s Joint Finance Committee gives its approval to court settlements negotiated by Kaul.
The Democratic governor and his top law enforcement officer say the policy violates the Wisconsin Constitution’s separation-of-powers doctrine.
The state Supreme Court has ruled it doesn’t violate the constitution in all cases but left open the possibility that might be true in some instances.
This is the sixth lawsuit filed over the set of laws passed in December 2018 designed to limit the powers of Evers and Kaul.
