The Curriculum Committee of the Manitowoc Public School District Board of Education met earlier this week and approved three new courses for Lincoln High School.
According to Superintendent Mark Holzman, these courses are Baking and Pastry Arts, Competitive Team Sports, and Exploring Art 2. SeehaferNews.com asked Holzman how they determine which courses to add.
“Those Courses are generally brought forward by staff, based on interests that our students have.” Mark explained. He said they give the students a course description book, and “students choose electives that they are interested in.” If they notice a particular class or type of class is getting a lot of attention, they will expand the number of options in the genre of class. He said the students have shown interest in the Exploring Art program, which is a bit more advanced than some others already offered.
That is the same for the baking course. “We do have culinary arts, we do have places where we teach kids about cooking, but this one is specifically focused on baking,” the Superintendent said. “We have a lot of students who have shown interest in that.”
As for the inclusion of a new physical education class, Holzman explained that students are required to take at least 1 and a half credits of Phy Ed, but there are plenty of elective options as well. This class is designed to give students who enjoy those classes to have an advance course. All three courses will now go before the full Board for approval at their next meeting.
