Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director Travis Waack reacts to the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines being 90 and 94.5% effective in combating the virus.
“That’s fantastic news! Reasonable expectations were that they would be fifty percent effective so to see something in the 90 to 95 percent effective range is great!
Waack says there are some challenges yet to conquer. “You’ll have to get one dose and about a month later you’ll have to receive the second dose which must come from the same manufacturer as the first dose. Storage temperatures will be a challenge as well but these are things we’ve been preparing for.”
The County Emergency Director says Healthcare workers on the frontlines will receive the first vaccines.
“We need to protect those staffs so we can preserve our hospital capacity. Then probably about the same time will be our vulnerable nursing home residents and people living in assisted living facilities and we have good plans for when the vaccine will be distributed to the general public.”
Waack anticipates that to be late winter or early spring.
