A new bird sanctuary in Two Rivers is slowly coming together on the former Emerald Hills Golf Course.
John Durbrow of Newton is founder and director of the Van der Brohe Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary containing 65-acres along Highway 42. Durbrow tells SeehaferNews.com his plans are to develop the property with the planting of trees. But, prior to doing that, they’ll plant over 44-acres of prairie and pollinator meadow, to set the stage for the planting of 11-hundred trees they currently have planned. Durbrow admits it’s taking a while to get established because ‘planting seasons only come once or twice a year.
He told SeehaferNews.com, “In the interim we’re putting in a trail system accessible to the public to include 1.2 miles of primary trail, along with 1.6 miles of interior trails.”
As for the Arboretum plans for this project Durbrow said, “The building is a long-term dream. The arboretum won’t be installed until everything else is in place.”
The Newton resident says the timeline calls for the trails to be completed this Fall with hopes that the prairie and pollinator meadow can be in place a year from now, followed tree planting in the spring of 2022.
