Back on October 19th, Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels delivered his 2021 Executive Budget to the Common Council and is still waiting on a decision to be made.
We recently spoke with the Mayor, who reiterated the main points of the budget, including a tax decrease, over $6 million for roads, and $1.5 million for downtown improvements.
Another major aspect of the budget is the money set aside for work on the former CN Peninsula. There is about $3.3 million for the section of land now known as the River Point District, which will be used for, according to Nickels, “infrastructure, for what we hope will be development. We are working with two developers, which we should be able to announce pretty soon here.”
Despite the budget calling for a slight increase in taxes to pay off debt, Mayor Nickels decided against it to help save those financially effected by COVID-19 a few dollars.
He was able to do this because of the strong fiscal planning the city has done over the past 10 years under the leadership of Mayor Nickels.
The Finance Committee is expected to approve the budget at their meeting on November 16th.
