***Original Story***
The Basswood Road Compost site in Manitowoc had to be closed temporarily late yesterday afternoon when a rather large fire occurred in a pile of leaves.
Jon Reisenbuechler is Operations Manager for the Manitowoc County Recycling Center & compost sites and he told SeehaferNews.com, “the fire probably consumed a quarter to a third of the leaf pile and as a fire crew was saturating it, workers pulled apart about half of the pile.”
As to what happened Reisenbuechler said they aren’t positive at this point but believe, “it was probably from hot ashes that were dumped off here, but we’ll have to review our surveillance footage.”
Cleanup efforts were underway early last evening at the Basswood Road compost site and those vehicles bringing materials there, were told to return today.
