The votes have been counted, and there will be no change in local representation at the state or national level.
According to Manitowoc County Clerk Jessica Backus, 70% of eligible voters in the county cast a ballot, with 51.23% doing so absentee. The Town of Manitowoc Rapids reported the highest voter turnout of 90% followed by the City of Manitowoc District 10 with 89% and Town of Eaton 10 with 87%.
As for the results, starting with the race for the 6th Congressional seat, incumbent Republican Glen Grothman retains his position in Washington, collecting nearly 60% of the votes over his Democratic challenger Jessica King.
Grothman told SeehaferNews.com that he is excited to get back to work.
“I do look forward to getting back to Washington next week,” he said. “I feel humble to be given another term by the voters in the 6th Congressional District.”
Grothman also said this election cycle was quite different due to the pandemic.
“We obviously had to spend more on television this time around. We were fortunate to have some good advertisements that were helpful as well,” Grothman explained. “I think I got around the district a lot for the first 5 years I had the job. There were some opportunities to meet people over the past 6 months, and wherever I went people recognized me.”
Meanwhile, Republican Shae Sortwell retained his spot in the 2nd Assembly District, defeating Democrat Mark Kiley by nearly 3,500 votes.
“I thank them so much for their support,” Sortwell lamented. “This is my first real job review. I’ve been here for a couple of years, and the people of the 2nd Assembly District came out in such good numbers in support of me.”
Sortwell also said that he actually received support from outside the Republican Party. He said that Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike “looked at my record and said, ‘Here’s somebody who does what he thinks is right.’ That’s what I’m trying to do, tell people exactly where I stand, and I think the people of my District have shown that’s what they want in their Representative.”
And in the final local race, Republican incumbent Paul Tittl will continue to represent the area as the 25th Assembly District representative. He defeated his challenger Kerry Trask by over 6,800 votes.
The Manitowoc native said that he has been humbled by his political career.
“When you get that many people putting out yard signs, voting for you and making an extra effort to make sure I get back to Madison, it’s just very humbling, and I’m very very thankful to the voters.”
Tittl says that he will be busy the next two years in Madison.
“I have a lot of different bills that I’ve been working on on mental health, and I’m going to continue working on that,” he told SeehaferNews.com. “I have a few bills dealing with sporting heritage and hunting, so we will be working on a lot of different things. Of course the budget is coming up right away, and we are just trying to be responsible to tax payers that sent us to do a job.”
As of right now, the presidential race has not been decided, with 7 states left to report, including Wisconsin.
