A local organization is reaching out to those affected by COVID-19 to help them pay for their housing.
We spoke with Colleen Homb from Lakeshore CAP, who explained that they were contacted by the Department of Administration back in May, and asked if they would be willing to provide rental assistance for those in need.
“Governor Evers had applied, initially, $25 million to the program, and he has recently added another $10 million. We are a part of that,” Homb explained. “We are providing up to $3,000 per household in rental assistance for people who have been affected by COVID-19.”
That money provided by the Governor was a part of the CARES Act funding the State received. The program is actually a bit of a double helper, as those applying will also be walked through the process of applying for Utility Assistance.
“The first step is to apply online at our website, www.LakeshoreCAP.org,” Homb said. “There is a yellow almost kind of a ticker tape on the front of the home page that tells you were to go to apply.”
Some people are not eligible for this specific program, but that does not mean you are stuck. “We will then see if you are eligible for other rental assistance funds and programs that we have. Right now we are focusing on getting the word out on what is called the RAP Program, the Rental Assistance Program.”
The program started June 8th and will end November 24th and is available for residents of Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Door and Kewaunee counties.
So far, Lakeshore CAP has provided over $1 million in rental assistance for area residents.
