Eternal Flame, from manitowoceternalflame.org
After nearly becoming empty in 2012, the fund which keeps Manitowoc’s Eternal Flame lit is nearly at their goal of $200,000.
The monument, located on North 18th just south of the intersection with Michigan Avenue, was built in 1923, with the flame being added in 1969. Since then the City of Manitowoc has been responsible for holding the fund which maintains the flame, but in 2012, that fund was nearly empty. Former Finance Director Steve Corbeille and the Finance Committee then held a meeting, and determined that they needed $200,000 in that fund in order to make sure it would stay lit eternally, as the name suggests.
We recently received an update from Tom Hoffman, a Vietnam veteran, and a member of the Eternal Flame Committee, who said they are at around 75% of that goal. He thanked the citizens, and businesses who have contributed so far, and said that on Veterans Day, November 11th, a small ceremony will be held at the Flame to honor those who have donated over $1,000.
