
MONDAY
– A Manitowoc woman who disappeared in September has been found safe. 32-year old Lacy Komanekin was located yesterday and police say she was found in another state. No other information was released.
– Sheboygan Police arrested four juveniles who are believed to be responsible for entering unlocked vehicles in several areas of the city. The thefts or attempted thefts occurred in the Memorial, End Park and Raider neighborhoods late Saturday evening. Police said some property was recovered from the teens which may’ve been stolen from vehicles.
– The 32nd Annual Lakeshore Holiday Parade in downtown Manitowoc has been cancelled for 2020. Mayor Justin Nickels announced today (Monday) that primarily due to public health concerns surrounding Covid-19 and the daily increasing positive cases in Manitowoc County that it’s in the best interest of all involved to cancel the lakeshore tradition for this year.
– The Youth Department at Manitowoc Public Library is now closed to the public. This decision was made so that we can continue critical onsite services amidst low staffing levels and to focus our resources for the community during unprecedented circumstances.
TUESDAY
– One person received what were described as “minor burns” as the result of a structure fire Tuesday morning on Manitowoc’s south side. The fire occurred at a home in the 1300 block of South 17th Street, and several explosions occurred during the suppressing efforts. No other injuries were reported and the residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.
– An 18-year-old Manitowoc man is now facing charges after he allegedly ran from police. The man was yelling at and threatening another man in the 800 block of School Street, and the officer told him he was going to be arrested. The man then took off on foot but was captured a short while later.
– Lakeshore CAP is offering rental assistance to those who have lost income due to COVID-19. Eligible renters can apply for up to $3,000 is assistance, which is being provided by the Wisconsin Rental Assistance Program and administered by Lakeshore CAP. Applications can be found at LakeshoreCAP.org, or by calling 920-682-3737.
– With the Manitowoc County Budget for 2021 currently being worked on and considered by the County Board, County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer says that parks will be a major focus over the next few years. Ziegelbauer touted the recently completed pavilion at the Maribel Caves Park while speaking with SeehaferNews.com. Zigelbauer will be presenting his budget to the Board soon, with a vote scheduled for early November.
WEDNESDAY
– A De Pere man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly crashed into a business in Ashwaubenon while driving drunk. The accident occurred just before 8:00 yesterday morning in the 3300 block of Packerland Drive. The 45-year-old male driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and he was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
– According to data compiled by the New York Times, Manitowoc and Sheboygan are among the 20 metro areas most affected by COVID-19, 10 of which are in Wisconsin. The other cities on that list in Wisconsin are Oshkosh/Neenah, Green Bay, Wausau/Weston, Beaver Dam, Fond du Lac, Marinette, and Platteville.
– The Manitowoc County Health Department’s Annual Flu Clinic will be a little different this year. According to Health Officer Mary Halada, the event, scheduled for October 27th, will be conducted in a drive-thru fashion. The Drive-Thru Flu Clinic will be held at the Manitowoc County Expo Center from 2:00 to 5:00 for children age 6 months to 18 years old.
– Hartman’s Bakery in Manitowoc has been a lakeshore staple since its inception as Yindra Bakery in the 1950’s, and now they have a second location in downtown Two Rivers. The bakery employs about 20 people with five clerks working in Two Rivers. Hours are from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday thru Friday and Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Grand Opening and ribbon cutting for their new location on Washington Street will be held Saturday at 11 a.m.
THURSDAY
– Two Manitowoc residents have been arrested on multiple drug charges. 32-year-old Breanna E. Pieschel and 29-year-old Malachi R. Hetzer were found to be in possession of a multitude of narcotics and drug paraphernalia. Both are now facing a litany of drug related charges.
– The Appleton Safety and Learning Committee is leading the conversation with city officials regarding a proposal to lower the fines for marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession. At least two Appleton Alders are on board as they proposed lowering the fine from $200 down to only $5. Police Chief Todd Thomas said that he believes $5 is too low. The recommendation is going to the Common Council for a final decision.
– According to the Wisconsin DOT, we are currently in the midst of the peak time for deer vs vehicle crashes. Officials recommend that drivers slow down, buckle up, and keep an eye on the side of the road especially at dawn and dusk.
– Over the past few weeks, Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director Travis Waack has been reporting that the number of available beds in the 10 area hospitals are starting to dwindle due to the spike in COVID-19 cases. Waack voiced his concerns with this trend, but also said that the hospitals are working very hard to make some more available as quick as possible. FRIDAY
-7 Police vehicles were spotted at the Marathon gas station on Washington Street in Manitowoc Thursday evening. A representative with the MTPD explained that a suspect was being arrested for a traffic violation and was not being cooperative, which is why so many vehicles were on the site.
– A former employee in the Brown County Government is now facing charges after allegedly stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars in property. Kevin Raye, who was employed by the County as their Enterprise Network and Infrastructure Manager, has been charged with two counts of Class F felony Theft-Movable Property – Fraud, one count of Theft-Movable Property -Larceny, and one count of Misconduct.
– The Manitowoc County COVID-19 taskforce has unanimously agreed to suspend in-person court appearances, with few and very specific exceptions. According to information from Clerk of Courts Lynn Zigmunt, no jury trials will be held but court remains open and in session.
– Due to escalating COVID-19 cases within our community, the Manitowoc Public Library will be transitioning to curbside pickup services only, effective Monday. Although the building will remain closed, they will maintain their current hours of operation to ensure access to their resources and collection through their curbside pickup services.
