One person received what were described as “minor burns” as the result of a structure fire this morning on Manitowoc’s south side.
Fire Chief Todd Blaser says MFRD personnel received a “transmission of alarm” call shortly after 7:30am this morning from a residence in the 1300 block of South 17th Street. Initial reports indicated flames were visible from the back of the residence also stating an explosion had taken place.
Upon arrival MFRD Crews located the blaze engulfing a detached garage on the property where a “large volume” fire was put out in the back of the residence. The fire spread to the second level of the garage with several “large explosions” occurring during suppressing efforts. Although no official cause has been determined, fireworks may have been present in the garage.
The blaze was under control in about thirty minutes with “significant overhaul” needed to totally extinguish the blaze. Several exterior adjacent residences and two vehicles also suffered fire damage. The owner of the home was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries and all occupants were able to evacuate safely and is being assisted by the Red Cross.
A dollar amount of damage is not available at this time and the cause remains under investigation. Agencies assisting on scene include Manitowoc Police, MPU and WPS and several Manitowoc County Fire and EMS Departments.
