Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels says homestretch preparations are being made as he plans to deliver his 2021 Executive Budget to the City Council later this month.
“We’re planning for state cuts due to COVID and less sales tax income going into state coffers,” he explained. “We may lose some shared revenue or at least anticipating a potential cut in shared revenue.”
Nickels tells SeehaferNews.com that he’s promised citizens this guarantee. “With people who’ve lost jobs-with businesses that were forced to shut down or have decided to close their doors due to COVID there will not be a tax increase in next year’s budget.”
Nickels says he’s had to impose slight tax increases the last few years to help pay down debt, but now, “We’ve put ourselves in a really good financial position that with everything going on we’re able to not raise taxes this year. We can get through and lower our debt. We won’t have to go to our citizens and ask them for a little more.”
The Mayor will deliver his budget October 19th at 6:30 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall.
