The 29-year-old Oshkosh man facing First Degree Intentional Homicide has changed his plea.
Ian Suzuki, who is accused of murdering Jay Puestohl, is now pleading not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
The main difference between this plea and a straight forward not-guilty plea is that if the jury finds him guilty, they will then need to determine if Suzuki had a mental disease, and, if so, if he lacked the capacity to conform his behavior to the law.
If they determine that he did, he would be committed to a psychiatric facility. But if not, Suzuki could spend the rest of his life in prison.
Suzuki was arrested back in February after he allegedly stabbed Puestohl, a retired police officer, following an argument at his mother’s home.
His jury trial is scheduled for January 11th.
