The Green Bay Packers point to big increases in local COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations as the reason they have decided to suspend in-person fan attendance at Lambeau Field.
Over the last month, the percentage of COVID-19 tests with positive results statewide had more than doubled.
Packers President and C-E-O Mark Murphy says the team is very concerned with the rate of infection in the Green Bay area, saying the numbers are trending in the wrong direction for positive test results and hospitalizations.
The decision to keep fans out of Lambeau will cost the local economy millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, the career of Packers rookie tight end Josiah Deguara is on hold while he recovers from a serious knee injury.
Deguara was hurt in the last two minutes of the win over Atlanta while he was playing on punt coverage. He had just returned to action after missing two games with an ankle injury suffered in the season opener at Minnesota.
Coach Matt LaFleur says he expects Deguara to bounce back, saying Green Bay’s third-round draft pick still has a bright future in the N-F-L.
