A Winnebago County judge has bound a 27-year-old man over for trial on a charge of first-degree intentional homicide.
Ricardo Martinez-Mendez reportedly told investigators the victim had insulted his girlfriend last month. Martinez-Mendez says Jarvis Gladney threatened to kill him as they argued, so he pulled out his gun. He says Gladney grabbed him by the neck, then was pushed to the ground.
Gladney died of a gunshot wound to his chest.
Martinez-Mendez refused to come out when authorities arrived, creating a standoff that lasted four hours.
He is scheduled to enter a plea when he returns to court October 23rd.
