
MONDAY
– Now that school is Back in session, the School Resource Officers in the Manitowoc Police Department are back as well. Chief Nick Reimer says “Overall, the students of our community are well mannered, well educated, and traveling down the road for success.”
– The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office said two males are in custody for a shooting incident early Sunday morning at a nightspot in the Village of Harrison. The investigation continues and no further information will be released at this time. The sheriff’s office in Chilton thanked those citizens who called in with tips about the shooting.
– There is a new way to satisfy your sweet tooth in Two Rivers. The former Honey Pot building on Memorial Drive is being transformed into a specialty shop called Renee’s Chocolates. Remodeling is continuing at the Two Rivers location, and plans are to also offer a variety of popcorn options along with the chocolates.
– An Appleton man is facing his 6th OWI charge after being arrested over the weekend. The Wisconsin State Patrol is reported that a troop noticed 37-year-old Lee Thao driving erratically at around 9:30 PM on Saturday and conducted a traffic stop. The Trooper reported noticing signs of impairment which lead to a field sobriety test being administered.
TUESDAY
– Former Vice President Joe Biden was at the Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry in Manitowoc yesterday afternoon, a stop which brought out hundreds of people both in support of the Democratic Presidential Nominee and in opposition to him. Manitowoc’s 7th District Alderman Aaron Baily was on hand and he did not approve of the yelling and obscenities, saying “We don’t need adults acting like teenagers.”
– Gas prices are back on the rise in Eastern Wisconsin. Manitowoc County saw a 6-cent rise in price per gallon of gas, now at $2.09, while Sheboygan County is up a penny to $1.98. Outagamie County continues to have the cheapest gas in the state, priced out at $1.87.
– The Cleveland campus of Lakeshore Technical College has unveiled a brand-new state of the art culinary facility. Opened for use on August 24th, the new kitchen at the Cleveland campus allows students to learn and hone their skills in a newly constructed commercial kitchen custom-designed for educational purposes.
– A Deputy in the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office is now facing charges after he was involved in a wrong way crash which seriously injured an Appleton. 39-year-old Jonathan Cvengros is now facing charges of Reckless Driving Causing Great Bodily Harm, as well as other traffic violations.
WEDNESDAY
– Manitowoc Police officer Dale Ten Haken was murdered while on duty 22-years ago ON Wednesday. Jason Halda and Michael Watts were both convicted in the killing, with Halda serving a life sentence without parole as he pulled the trigger. Watts will be up for parole next year.
– A man is now facing charges after turning himself in following a shooting in Chilton over the weekend. 33-year-old Hugo Rico is facing charges including First Degree Reckless Injury and had his bond set at $50,000 cash Tuesday morning. A second man turned himself into police, but he has not been charged as of yet.
– Two men were arrested yesterday morning in Sheboygan following a short chase. According to reports, a Sheboygan Police Officer attempted to pull a vehicle over but the driver took off. The driver failed to negotiate a turn onto South Business Drive and sent his vehicle up an embankment near Kwik Trip. Two men exited the vehicle and took off on foot, with one being captured a short distance away, and the other arrested in his home.
– The Manitowoc Police Department’s K9 Unit has teamed up with Honeymoon Acres out of New Holstein for their 5th Annual Holiday Wreath Sale. Orders must be turned in by Friday November 6th, with pick up taking place on November 24th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM at the Police Department Garage off of Jay Street. THURSDAY
-Waldo Boulevard in Manitowoc is now finished. Several city dignitaries were on hand Wednesday to cut the ribbon to officially open it up to traffic. The two-year project was split into two contracts. In 2019 urban reconstruction was done from 14th street to Maritime Drive while this year reconstruction and resurfacing from County Highway R to 14th Street began in March.
– With the election coming up in only six and a half weeks, Two Rivers City Manager Greg Buckley issued a few reminders in his City Manager’s report. In Person Absentee Voting will take place Tuesday, October 20 through Friday, October 23 and Monday, October 26 through Friday, October 30, from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM at City Hall Lobby. – Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director Travis Waack voiced his concern over the spike in hospitalization rates due to COVID-19. Waack said that in the 10 hospitals in the Northeast Wisconsin Region, “We currently have 66 patients hospitalized with COVID-19. That’s up 22 in the last week. 20 of those are in the ICU, and that number is up 8 in the last week.”
FRIDAY
– Manitowoc County Emergency Services Director Travis Waack reports that school age children are testing positive for the coronavirus at a much higher rate than they have in the past. Waack said that the concern there is that they are then bringing the virus home, and infecting their parents, grandparents, and other family members.
– A stack of mail was found in a ditch in Outagamie County, and among the letters and bills were some absentee ballots. According to County Sheriff’s Office reports, three trays of mail that were destined for the post office were found in a ditch along Highway 96 near County Highway CB in Greenville. The number of ballots that were found was not disclosed, and it was not stated if they were filled out ballots or were on their way to the voters.
– The identity of the woman how died in a Door County car accident last weekend has been released. 82-year-old Chicagoan Fern Hacker was traveling north on Highway 42 near Cottage Row Road in the town of Gibraltar on Saturday September 19th, when she struck another vehicle in the rear that was turning into a business.
– Two area businesses have expanded in Two Rivers. Hartman’s Bakery has opened up a new location at 1615 Washington Street, while Cleveland Cycleworks will be opening up an indoor skatepark and arcade next Saturday. That is located at 2022 Washington Street.
-Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels has declared September as Suicide Prevention Month. In 2019 Manitowoc County experienced it’s second highest number of suicide deaths in 12 years, with 20 people losing their lives. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for ages 15-34 in Wisconsin, and the 3rd leading cause of death for ages 35-44.
