19-years ago today, the single deadliest terrorist attack in human history occurred involving four coordinated attacks by the Islamist group, al Qaeda.
Manitowoc Fire Captain Seth Dramm told SeehaferNews.com he was working that morning, on September 11th 2001, at station 3 on Dewey Street and recalls getting a radio message from Battalion Chief Tim Herzog to turn on the news when the first World Trade Center tower was hit by an airplane.
“All I kept thinking was ‘Oh my gosh get out!’”, he recalled. “When the towers collapsed, it was very overwhelming.”
343 firefighters and 72-law enforcement officers were killed that day, but as Dramm put it, “They had a job to do, and that’s what they love doing.”
Overall, there were 2,977 fatalities, over 25,000 injuries and substantial long term health consequences along with at least $10-billion worth of infrastructure & property damage.
In the aftermath of the attacks and watching t-v coverage, Captain Dramm termed it “a traumatic event and hard to shake.”
