Leaders at Carthage College have decided the team names “Red Men” and “Lady Reds” aren’t “unifying symbols” – and they have been retired, as of Wednesday.
Nearly 3,000 people with ties to the Kenosha colleges shared their opinions in a survey, with most calling for a new team identity.
The college mascot, Torchie, has been retired, too.
Board of Trustees chairman Jeff Hamar says that the body believes a change is appropriate after a task force cited concerns about racial and gender identity connected to the team names.
