The director of athletic medicine at Penn State reports about one-third of the Big Ten athletes testing positive for COVID-19 have developed myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, and it played a role in the conference decision to postpone the football season.
Myocarditis can be fatal, though the Mayo Clinic says it improves on its own in many cases.
The Rochester facility suggests anyone diagnosed should avoid competitive sports for at least three-to-six months.
Its presence among Wisconsin athletes hasn’t been reported.
