City leaders in Green Bay are taking a harder look into getting body cameras for their police officers in the wake of the shooting in Kenosha.
Mayor Eric Genrich and Police Chief Andrew Smith are working on several policy changes and policing initiatives including the purchase of body cameras.
As we have reported previously with Manitowoc Police Chief Nick Reimer, these products are quite expensive. The upfront cost of purchasing the cameras is only the start, as the Department and City would have to invest in a computer system with enough memory to store the videos of several police officers on each shift for several months, due to state requirements on saving evidence.
Another initiative the police department is working on implementing is collecting demographic information during traffic stops. This would ensure that officers aren’t focusing their attention on people of a certain gender, ethnicity, or race.
