The Two Rivers City Council last night unanimously approved a resolution to be sent to U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin along with Congressman Glen Grothman urging Congress to support emergency funding to states and cities at the look at further COVID 19 relief legislation.
City Manager Greg Buckley told SeehaferNews.com, “We know there has been a lot more spending than we have money going on at the federal level as we address the economic fallout from the pandemic, but there are some real fears out there about what this is going to mean for States, and in turn their Cities, Villages, Towns, and urging actions by Congress on that.”
Buckley adds that during these “highly unusual times” the Federal Government is usually the entity that needs to step up.
“We see a huge state budget deficit, and there’s already a $2 billion hole in the state budget from what we’ve heard,” Buckley explained. “ The idea of cutting snow plowing, fire, police, parks and rec, and the whole gamut of city services won’t just be some philosophical argument over the coffee. It will be a reality.”
Cities can only borrow to meet capital not operational needs leading the Two Rivers City Manager to say, “just as businesses and individuals were provided help during this pandemic, states and cities also need financial assistance to get through these difficult and uncertain times.”
