A fire broke out yesterday morning in the kitchen of a home in the 1700 block of North Oneida Street in Appleton.
When crews arrived, they noted heavy smoke emitting from the building, despite the fact that the residents told crews they had put out the fire.
The residents also told the firefighters tat the blaze started on the stove in the kitchen.
The entire first floor received smoke damage, and all residents had evacuated by the time crews arrived.
Both the upper and lower units had smoke alarms, but both were missing their batteries. The only reason the residents were able to escape is because they woke up choking on the smoke.
The Appleton Fire Department is using this case as a stern reminder to make sure you have working smoke alarms in your home or apartment.
