The Manitowoc County Mariners opened their Semi-Pro Football season on Saturday with a 34-31 loss to the Southern Lakes Blue Devils, at Elkhorn High School.
Mariners quarterback Marcos Alfaro Junior passed for 3-touchdowns but was intercepted twice. One of his scoring strikes went to Green Bay Preble ‘alum, Anthony Veriha, who caught 3-passes for 75-yards and a 25-yard TD in his rookie debut.
Adrian Abeyta also reached paydirt on a 60-yard run.
Former Manitowoc Lincoln Ship, Jaris Parnau, lead the way defensively with 5-tackles and a forced fumble. Robert Sallie also had a forced fumble and 2-sacks while Dylan Waupoose added 3-tackles for a loss.
The Mariners remain on the road this Saturday when they face the Leydon Illinois Lions in suburban Chicago.
