A local Girl Scout Troop is trying to earn their Silver Award while also attempting to protect local waterways.
Alayna, Alexis, Samantha, Shyla, and Bailey are a part of Troop 8543 in Manitowoc, and are creating video PSA’s regarding the issue, and will be sending them to several organizations. Troop Leader Karen Duvalle explained that they are going to send them to the local FMRW, Friends of the Manitowoc River Watershed, and Lakeshore Natural Resources Partnership among others.
The Scouts told SeehaferNews.com that the Silver Award is the second highest award a Girl Scout can earn, behind the Gold Award. Alayna said, “The Silver Award is basically an award we get for hours of community service,” and Alexis elaborated saying, “It has to be sustainable, not just a one-time thing.”
The Troop does get to do other fun things besides giving back to the community. They have been to places like Michigan to whitewater raft and have planned a trip to South Dakota to visit Mount Rushmore. Their trip to Florida which was planned for this year had to be canceled, but the girls are all looking forward to making that trip sometime in the future.
