Adam Tegen, Manitowoc Community Development Director, recently spoke with SeehaferNews.com regarding the stockpiling of dirt and other material on the former Canadian National Peninsula property, just under 21-acres of land west of the 10th Street bridge.
He explained that the city bought that land in April of last year, and since then have been working to get it ready for redevelopment. Tegen said the current progress is two-fold, as they are bringing a lot of clean fill to that site, to “raise the elevation to make sewer and water and other utilities work properly, in addition to the high lake levels.”
The other aspect is the old warehouse foundation and oil infrastructure left from when it was owned by the railroad company. “We will being having contractors on site that are basically removing those,” Teagan explained. “Then we are doing some additional environmental testing out there.”
The City’s Community Development Director says the prep work is winding down with 95% of the engineering done for phase 1. “We are hoping that, assuming the council signs off on that concept, we will be moving forward,” Tegan said. “We’ve had fairly strong interest from the development community, so we are hoping that there will be some development that will be kicking off next year as well.” In addition, Adam Tegen said several streets near downtown are being reconstructed and the local contractor has permission to temporarily use the former CN site for concrete crushing over the next month or two.
