The WIAA Board of Control held a virtual meeting this morning pertaining to the path moving forward for sports this academic school year amid the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Earlier this summer The Board of Control voted 8 to 3 to recommend-not mandate that schools move ahead to proceed with a plan to start practice beginning this Monday for “low risk” sports- including boys and girls cross country along with female competition in swimming and diving-tennis and golf while delaying practice for football-volleyball and soccer until September 7th (Labor Day).
Manitowoc Public Schools Superintendent Mark Holzman. “I think the challenge for every school, is the travel to different counties,” Holzman said. “In some cases, counties will have different regulations, and schools will have different regulations.”
Holzman elaborated further on potential conflicts for Lincoln High School-a member of the Fox River Classic Conference, saying “Green Bay we know is 100% virtual, but if Green Bay decides they are not going to allow their kids to play, every school in our conference then has at least two holes maybe more. Then if Sheboygan decides they’re not going to go, you now have four holes in your conference, and at some point you as a conference cannot make it go.”
The local educator tells SeehaferNews.com that the Conference will gather after today’s meeting and discuss their options adding “We know the importance of what all co-circular activities mean to our student-athletes but we must proceed first and foremost with the safety-health and well-being for everyone.”
