Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig said yesterday he learned from their Metro Drug Unit that the vast majority of their investigations involve heroin and methamphetamine.
During an appearance Monday on WOMT’s Be-My-Guest program, Hartwig was asked a question by a listener about drugs, like marijuana, coming in from neighboring states.
“Possession of Marijuana, Distribution of Marijuana in Wisconsin is still illegal,” Hartman explained. “But as far as numbers coming in from Michigan, Illinois, or across on the Badger, we really haven’t gotten too much of that, because the majority of the focus of our drug unit is on some of the heavier hitting stuff, which is causing overdoses. So obviously our heroin epidemic, but now we are starting to see a major increase in Meth over the last few years.”
The sheriff says of particular concern to him and others in law enforcement is on Fentanyl.
“Fentanyl is starting to be found in a lot of substances,” the Sheriff explained. “Fentanyl…is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine. It is a very dangerous substance.”
Hartwig explained Fentanyl is used as a cutting agent to bring the drug potency up, which does lead to accidental overdoses.
