With all the publicity about the coronavirus pandemic, the number of fatalities locally has not been large. So far this year, one death in Manitowoc County has been blamed on the disease although, Pneumonia was also complicating factor in that COVID death.
For comparison, County Health Officer Mary Halada supplied the State government’s listing of Manitowoc County deaths in the year 2017.

Manitowoc County had just shy of 80,000 residents in 2017, meaning roughly one quarter of 1 % of people in the
county died from either heart disease or cancer, two tenths of a percent died from the flu or Pneumonia, and .0075% died from motor vehicle accidents. Compare that to the percentage of the county who have died from COVID-19, which is 0.0012% of all people in Manitowoc County.
For further reference, 2 suicide deaths have been confirmed this year in Manitowoc County according to Donna Firman from Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County, and one additional death is still pending classification. Compare that to last year’s total of 20 all year, this shows a downward trend in the number of suicide deaths in Manitowoc County. As Donna put it, “We’re trending in the right direction.”
