According to the United Way of Manitowoc County, 31% of the 35,259 households in the County are struggling to afford basic necessities like housing, childcare, food, transportation, and internet access.
These eye-opening statistics were revealed in the state’s third ALICE report, released this week by United Way of Wisconsin in partnership with United for ALICE and local United Way’s across the state, including United Way Manitowoc County.
ALICE, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, describes households earning more than the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) but less than the state’s basic cost of living, which the report calls the ALICE Threshold.
In Manitowoc County, 20% of households are ALICE, while another 11% fall below the FPL.
While these numbers are still rather high, they did show an improvement from the 2018 report, where 34% of households were ALICE or below the FPL.
