For the past 8 years, Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County has been hosting their annual 5-K Walk/Run for Hope in Two Rivers in the beautiful Neshotah Park, but this year it will be done a little different.
We spoke with Sara Meier from the organization, who explained that the event will be virtual this year. “We have 300 or more people each year,” she said. “and we just didn’t think it was safe or responsible to have an in-person event in September even, because we don’t know how things are going to be with the pandemic at that time.”
What a virtual walk/run consists of is people performing their 5-K sometime during the month of September and sending photos and videos of themselves doing it to Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County who will then post them on Facebook.
A silent auction will also be held the week of September 13th, with proceeds going to Prevent Suicide Manitowoc County, so they can battle a very important problem, prevention of youth suicide.
Meier told SeehaferNews.com that “Youth suicide is the second leading cause of death among youth age 10 to 24. In Manitowoc County there have been 6 teenagers, between 2010 and 2018 who died from suicide, and in the 20-30-year-old range, we have had 27 suicide deaths.”
If you know someone who died from suicide, you are encouraged to share their story with the group, who plans on making a memorial video for those loved ones.
The event will cost $20 for an individual, or $70 for a group of four, with a service fee of $2.50.
